January 23, 2003

Mr. Ray Judah, Chairman

Lee Board of County Commissioners

P.O. Box 398

Fort Myers , FL 33902

Dear Commissioner Judah,

Congratulations on your recent decision to amend the Lee County Comprehensive Plan to include with policies regarding flow-ways and green infrastructure.

This amendment is encouraging in that it promotes increased stormwater infiltration -- a very important process since much of the natural wetland resources have been lost from this region.  Restoration of historic natural flow-ways is another policy included in the amendment that has great potential for alleviating conditions that promote flooding and hydrologic alterations to receiving waters.

We look forward to working with Lee County staff members to develop amendments to the Land Development Code related to implementation of this new component of the Comprehensive Plan.  In addition, we feel privileged to have the opportunity to be working with Lee County staff members from both the Natural Resources and Planning offices in regard to public outreach and education on this topic, especially as it applies to our initiative to develop a nutrient management partnership for the Estero Bay Watershed.

Again, we congratulate and thank you for your support of this new Lee Plan initiative.  We hope that it leads to better stormwater management and improved conditions in the important surface water resources of Lee County .

Sincerely,

Michael R. Bauer, J.D., Ph.D.

Chairman
